Delta Air Lines flight DL296 is a routine scheduled flight between Tokyo Haneda and Atlanta, with the affected rotation diverting into Los Angeles being operated by N511DN.
As per data from Planespotters.net, N511DN is a 5.5 year old Airbus A350-900 that was delivered to the carrier back in June 2018.
Of the A350-900 aircraft, the airline has 28 of them in the fleet, of which 26 are in active service and two are currently parked, with an average age of 5.1 years.
Delta Air Lines flight DL296 departed Tokyo Haneda at 1920 local time today and proceeded eastbound to Atlanta.
Upon the signal of the aircraft being reacquired over the Pacific Ocean, it was then revealed that the aircraft would be diverting to Los Angeles.

As per the airline’s website, the diversion has been confirmed, but no reason into why the aircraft has diverted at this current point.
It is also unclear when DL296 will continue on to Atlanta from Los Angeles. On it’s diversion, the aircraft did not squawk the 7700 emergency code.
This remains a developing story as the cause of the diversion is currently unclear. AviationSource will approach Delta Air Lines for comment on this incident.
As soon as we establish such information, then we will update this article accordingly in due course.
