Eurowings Launches Two New Routes From Stockholm Arlanda

Ultra-low cost carrier Eurowings will bolster its operations at Stockholm Arlanda Airport with the introduction of two new direct routes ahead of the summer of 2024.

This expansion marks a further step forward for both Eurowings and the airport.  The new routes will serve Hannover (HAJ) and Naples (NAP) respectively, adding to the carrier’s network from Arlanda.

The addition of new routes to Hannover and Naples strengthens air connectivity between Sweden, Tialy and Germany.

Since they first established their Swedish base in the summer of 2022, Eurowings has added a variety of destinations to their offer making the total number thirteen.

Stockholm to Hannover and Naples

Route Details

The new routes from Stockholm Arlanda Airport to Hannover (HAJ) and Naples (NAP) are poised to attract a diverse range of travellers. These include business professionals, tourists, and visiting friends and relatives (VFR) passengers.

Both Hannover and Naples are popular destinations known for their cultural heritage, scenic beauty, and economic significance.

Frequency and Schedule

Eurowings will operate the Stockholm Arlanda Airport – Hannover route twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays, starting from the 1st of May.

Similarly, the Stockholm Arlanda Airport – Naples route will be serviced twice a week, on Fridays and Sundays, commencing operations on the 14th of June.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Sweden’s largest airport, is set to experience a significant boost in connectivity to North America starting in mid-April 2024.

Two major US airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, are making a welcome return, offering new non-stop routes to key destinations.

This exciting development adds to the existing flight options and, combined with upcoming routes from Air Canada, will see Stockholm Arlanda offering:

  • Up to 30 weekly departures to North America, translating to approximately five flights per day.
  • Direct connections to major hubs like Newark, JFK (New York), Toronto, and Montreal.
  • Enhanced accessibility for both business and leisure travelers.

Earlier today, a Buzz Boeing 737 MAX was evacuated at Stockholm Arlanda due to smoke in the cabin.

It is understood that the Buzz Boeing 737 MAX affected by this incident at Stockholm Arlanda was SP-RZG.

As per data from Planespotters.net, SP-RZG is a 2.6 year old airframe that was delivered to the Ryanair subsidiary back in November 2021.

Of the 737 MAX 8 variant, Buzz has 13 of them, of which all are in active service and host an average fleet age of 2.5 years.

SP-RZG was due to operate Ryanair flight FR4526 between Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Krakow in Poland.

The aircraft was getting ready to pushback when it was noticed that passengers started disembarking from passenger slides.

From there, fire crews attended the aircraft in Stockholm Arlanda to ensure the safety of all passengers who were onboard the airplane.

It was later noted that the cause of this emergency evacuation was due to the Buzz Boeing 737 MAX having smoke in the cabin.

According to @cy__aviation on Instagram, this incident resulted in the temporary closure of Stockholm Arlanda Airport, whilst the incident was being addressed.

At the time of writing (10/12/23 @ 1750 UK time), SP-RZG is still on the ground at the Swedish airport, and is presumed grounded for the time being whilst technicians look at what went wrong.

All eyes will be on when SP-RZG, the Buzz Boeing 737 MAX 8, will become operational again following this incident.

Wizz Air establishes operations at Stockholm Arlanda

The ultra low-cost carrier Wizz Air is continuing its expansion with its sights set on Sweden’s largest airport, Stockholm Arlanda.

Starting 31 October 2023, the airline will launch two new routes from Stockholm Arlanda Airport to Budapest and Gdansk.

A partnership of similar values

Elizabeth Axtelius, Director Aviation Business at Swedavia made the following statement: “It is with great pleasure that we welcome Wizz Air to Stockholm Arlanda Airport, and we look forward to continuing to build on our long cooperation with the company.”

A new set of routes

Starting 31 October 2023, Wizz Air will operate Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) – Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) 4 times a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday) and Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) – Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN) 14 times a week.

As well as being the largest airport in Sweden, Stockholm Arlanda is also the third largest for passenger movements within the Nordic region.

Sustainability drivers

The partnership with Wizz Air is another step for Arlanda in their dedication to sustainability. In their mission statement the airport quotes: “Swedavia also works actively to promote the switch to sustainable aviation fuel and has the goal that five per cent of all fuel used for refuelling at Swedish airports shall be fossil-free by 2025.”

Swedavia’s energy transition work and its pioneering work to run climate-smart airports have won international awards, and in 2021 the trade organisation Airports Council International (ACI) named Stockholm Arlanda Eco-Innovation Airport of the Year.”

Wizz Air has this to say about their current aims for their position in the sustainable market: “Wizz Air is one of Europe’s fastest growing and most sustainable low-cost carriers and strives to be the greenest choice for air travel, leading the industry by example.”

Wizz Air operates with the lowest carbon emissions per passenger/km against all competitor airlines, which amounted to 53.8 grams in the financial year 2023.

Wizz Air has invested heavily in its fleet by adding new and replacing older aircraft with the Airbus A321neo aircraft, which offers a 50% reduction in noise footprint, a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and 50% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions compared to the previous generation aircraft.

The airline has also established its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) strategy and already partnered with four SAF suppliers across Europe.

Swedavia to develop Cargo City complex at Stockholm Arlanda Airport

Stockholm Arlanda Airport is currently in a development phase. Cargo City, a new centre for air cargo, logistics and manufacturing, is being developed in an area close to the terminals.

With land for development covering a total of 144,400 m2, Swedavia is currently seeking one or more partners for a long-term joint venture.

Swedavia AB is a Swedish state-owned company, which owns and operates ten of Sweden’s busiest airports. It has its head office at the air traffic control tower of Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) in Sigtuna Municipality near Stockholm.

Airport developments in progress

Construction is currently in full swing at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. In the summer of 2023, a new security checkpoint is set to open in Terminal 5.

Shortly after that, in the autumn the first step of new Marketplace will open – the largest commercial investment ever at Arlanda.

Beyond that, further construction work is also under way elsewhere at Arlanda. In the southwest section of the airport, Cargo City is taking shape.

Cargo City development

Cargo City will be a new centre for air cargo, logistics and manufacturing. Situated one kilometre from Sweden’s largest airport and with good connectivity to road networks, it is an optimal location for companies that need efficient premises and facilities.

About Stockholm Arlanda Airport

All Nippon Airways to Launch Stockholm-Tokyo Route

Japan’s largest airline, ANA, is set to launch a direct route from Stockholm Arlanda Airport to Tokyo Haneda.

From 31 January 2025, ANA will operate flights three times a week, connecting the Swedish capital to one of Asia’s most crucial markets.

This connection will serve as a vital link not only to Tokyo but also to the broader Asian and South Pacific regions, via ANA’s extensive network.

Jonas Abrahamsson, President and CEO of Swedavia, expressed confidence in the Swedish air travel market.

He stated, “ANA’s investment in a direct route from Stockholm Arlanda to Tokyo Haneda demonstrates this confidence.”

“ANA will play a crucial role in connecting Sweden to Japan and other key Asian markets. Swedavia aims to enhance connectivity, and ANA’s vast network facilitates meetings for business, leisure, and family visits.”

ANA Expands European Network With Flights to Milan, Stockholm and Istanbul

All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan’s flagship carrier, is set to further expand its European network. This will see the addition of three new destinations to its portfolio.

As part of its ambitious 2024 winter schedule, ANA will introduce non-stop flights from Tokyo Haneda. These will operate to Milan, Stockholm, and Istanbul.

This strategic move caters to the surging demand for international travel in the sector. It also further strengthens the bonds between Japan and these vibrant European cultural hubs.

New Route Scheduling

ANA will launch the new direct flights from Tokyo Haneda Airport on these dates:

  • December 3, 2024: Milan Malpensa Airport
  • January 31, 2025: Stockholm Arlanda Airport
  • February 12, 2025: Istanbul Airport

Norwegian is set to launch a new direct route connecting Stockholm Arlanda Airport to Skellefteå Airport on 28 October 2024.

The network expansion responds to the growing demand for improved connectivity to northern Sweden.

“Currently, there is a limited supply of flights to and from Skellefteå. Therefore, it’s particularly pleasing that we can announce today that we will be operating a route between Stockholm and Skellefteå.”

An SAS Airbus A320-200 operating a scheduled flight from Stockholm to Manchester has declared an emergency whilst en route.

SAS flight SK2547, an A320neo from Stockholm, declared the emergency with squawk code 7700 whilst approaching the United Kingdom east coast.

Having declared the emergency from the cruise at flight level FL380 (38,000 feet), the flight is continuing its inbound track for Manchester (MAN) at present.

The flight made an on-time departure out of Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) at 0801 local time. It then progressed normally prior to the emergency declaration.

Crossing the United Kingdom east coast, flight SK2547 has now left FL380, on descent for its destination Manchester Airport (MAN). The flight is maintaining emergency priority squawk 7700.

Weather for the flight’s arrival into MAN this morning is marginal VFR (MVFR), with a 1,200 foot cloud ceiling. Visibility is 10 kilometres or more, and RWY05 is currently active.

SAS flight SK2547 is now on descent below 10,000 feet. RWY05 is currently active at Manchester (MAN) for the flight’s arrival.

The nature of the emergency is not yet known.

SAS flight SK2547 has landed and is now clear of RWY05R, having declared an emergency whilst inbound earlier this morning.

The aircraft conducting today’s service from Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) was an Airbus A320-200N, registered SE-ROT. This is a 4.6-year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the national carrier Scandinavian Airlines (SAS).

It has been in active service with the airline since its initial delivery in September 2019. Scandinavian Airlines, more commonly known as SAS, is the flag carrier of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) was founded in 1946 and operates from its headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden. SAS is a member of the Star Alliance. The airline’s main hubs are Copenhagen Airport, Stockholm Arlanda Airport, and Oslo Airport, Gardermoen.
