The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has expanded the scope of Vertical’s Design Organisation Approval (DOA).

This becomes a crucial step forward in the development and certification of their leading-edge eVTOL VX4 aircraft.

This expanded DOA empowers Vertical’s engineering team to approve compliance in an increased number of technical areas. This includes critical systems such as flight control, avionics, and electrical systems.

This extension not only streamlines the certification process but also demonstrates the CAA’s growing confidence in Vertical’s in-house capabilities.

Stuart Simpson, CEO of Vertical Aerospace, gave comment on the certification development. “This milestone recognizes Vertical’s engineering prowess in VX4 aircraft certification.”

Santiago WOCA Conference Addresses Future Aviation in Americas

The 14th edition of the Wings of Change Americas Conference (WOCA), hosted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) was conducted last month.

The gathering brought together over 400 aviation industry representatives from across the Americas.

The two-day event took place in Santiago, Chile on April 10-11. It was held under the theme “Advancing Aviation for a Competitive and Sustainable Future,”

It served as a platform for meaningful discussions and collaboration to shape the region’s air transport future.

Santiago WOCA Conference 2024

Significantly, this year’s WOCA welcomed 16 tourism ministers from across the Americas, highlighting the vital link between tourism and aviation.

In his opening remarks, Peter Cerdá, IATA’s Regional Vice President for the Americas set the tone of the gathering. He emphasized that over 90% of foreign tourists visiting Latin America and the Caribbean arrive by air.

This underscores the importance of collaboration between governments and airlines to maximize the socio-economic benefits for the region.

Key Areas of Address

Cerdá further noted that air traffic has now rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. Connectivity within and beyond the Americas is now experiencing continued growth.

However, profitability remains a challenge for regional airlines. To address this, Cerdá called for collaborative efforts between governments and the industry on key topics:

  • Reduced Taxes and Fees: Lowering the financial burden on airlines and passengers is crucial. A fair and consistent fee structure across the Americas is essential for sustainable growth.
  • Harmonized Regulations: Aligning regulations with global best practices promotes consistency and efficiency. A level playing field needs to be established for airlines across borders, ensuring fair treatment compared to other transportation sectors.
  • Adequate Infrastructure: Airport and air traffic management infrastructure must adapt to accommodate future growth. Passenger needs should be prioritized when investing in airport upgrades.
  • Sustainability: Supportive policies for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) are needed from governments. This must take place alongside private sector investment in SAF production. The collaboration must also extend to other innovations to achieve the industry’s net-zero CO2 emission goals.

Broader Initiatives Under Discussion

The Chilean authorities used this opportunity to launch their “Vuelo Limpio” program. This is a public-private partnership roadmap for developing SAF in the country, aiming for 50% SAF use by 2050.

A dedicated panel discussion also focused on attracting new talent to the aviation industry. It emphasized the importance of diversity and inclusion (D&I).

As part of this initiative, Chile’s Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) signed on to IATA’s 25by2025 global program. This international program aims to enhance D&I within the aviation sector.

For the first time, WOCA offered three parallel tracks. These allowed participants to delve deeper into specific topics like Modern Airline Retailing, Regulatory Landscape, and Sustainability.

“The clear message from this conference is collaboration,” concluded Cerdá. “By working together, we can overcome challenges, drive innovation, and build a more resilient and sustainable aviation value chain for the Americas.”

UK Authorities Raise Concerns Over Air Peace Gatwick Operations

Concerns have been raised by United Kingdom aviation authorities with respect to Air Peace operations at London Gatwick Airport.

According to Nigerian news reports, London Gatwick Airport has filed two Mandatory Occurrence Reports (MOR). These have been placed with the UK aviation regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

The subject reports relate to alleged safety violations by the Nigerian flag carrier Air Peace in the course of its flight operations from the London airport.

What is a Mandatory Occurrence Report?

A Mandatory Occurrence Report (MOR) refers to a document submitted to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) detailing a specific event that qualifies as a potential threat to aviation safety.

Here’s a breakdown of key points about MORs:

  • Purpose: Improve aviation safety by identifying and addressing potential risks.
  • Who Reports:
    • Airline operators
    • Pilots
    • Other designated personnel involved in commercial aviation (e.g., maintenance)
  • What’s Reported: Not all incidents necessitate an MOR. It applies to occurrences that could endanger the aircraft, occupants, or others, even if an accident wasn’t narrowly avoided.

According to a news report carried by the local Nigerian source New Telegraph, Gatwick Airport submitted an itemised list of claimed safety violations to the UK CAA. These details were in turn supplied to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Whilst specific details have not been formally confirmed by UK authorities, two reports were filed and subsequently submitted to the NCAA for review.

These were a ‘United Kingdom SAFA Ramp Inspection Report’ and a ‘NATS Management System Safety Report’.

The NCAA has subsequently formally contacted the airline, requesting that it provide information with respect to corrective action taken.

Air Peace Gatwick Route Inauguration

Air Peace has only recently commenced flight operations from Lagos, Nigeria to London. The March commencement of flight services was marred by issues with slot constraints.

This became problematic, despite the airline securing a Foreign Carrier Operator Permit back in November last year.

Oluwatoyin Olajide, chief operating officer of Air Peace made comment on the issue in February this year, prior to the inaugural service.

“Since securing its authorisation to fly into the UK, after satisfying all the requirements, the issue of slot allocation at Gatwick Airport has been the major obstacle preventing the Airline from commencing the direct flight into London”.

Criticism by Air Peace CEO

Tensions became further evident last month when the Air Peace CEO voiced criticisms of London Gatwick Airport.

CEO Allen Onyema made the following criticisms about London Gatwick Airport:

  • 24 hours before the inaugural, the airline was moved to another check-in area, with featured a carousel that didn’t work.
  • Flights delayed by at least 20 minutes due to the airport failing to provide ground handlers.
  • With the above point, London Gatwick Airport has a 80/20 rule on slots, meaning that 80% of flights must leave on-time otherwise they get revoked.
  • All incidents on the part of Gatwick will be logged by the airline and then taken further.

Onyema also believed that such incidents had been a result of retaliation by competitors due to Air Peace’s low-cost fares out of London Gatwick.

Conclusion

The recent air safety concerns raised by the London airport have now been raised to the attention of the Nigerian aviation regulator, the NCAA.

The UK CAA for its part has reportedly referred the issue to the U.K.’s Department for Transport.

The upcoming summer season promises a return to normalcy for UK air travel enthusiasts. However, a recent survey by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) reveals a cautious optimism among passengers.

While nearly half (45%) believe airlines and airports are prepared for the surge in travel, this confidence comes with a caveat.

A significant portion (40%) have experienced some form of disruption within the past year, casting a shadow on their expectations.

UK Air Travel: Optimism Tempered with Caution

Delays topped the list of concerns, with 31% of respondents reporting them as the most common issue. Cancellations followed closely at 13%, highlighting the frustration passengers faced.

Strikes (9%) and lost or damaged luggage (7%) rounded out the list of travel disruptions. Interestingly, despite these anxieties, almost half (45%) haven’t altered their summer travel plans.

This demonstrates a degree of resilience and an underlying confidence in the air travel industry. It also highlights the sheer strength of pent-up travel demand which has continued ever since pandemic restrictions first lifted.

Proactive Measures to Minimize Disruption

Recognizing potential challenges, the CAA is taking a proactive approach. They are working closely with the industry – airlines and airports alike – to ensure challenges are effectively managed and passenger experiences remain positive.

CAA Chief Executive Rob Bishton’s recent visit to Stansted Airport exemplifies this collaborative effort.

Here, he gained first-hand insights into the industry’s plans to minimize disruption. The visit included a tour of the terminal, allowing him to assess passenger flow and identify areas for improvement.

Discussions with airport officials focused on Stansted’s plans for future growth, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle the anticipated increase in passengers.

Ascend Airways Secures UK Air Operator Certificate

Ascend Airways, a recent addition to Avia Solutions Group’s (ASG) growing portfolio of airlines, has been granted a critical Air Operator Certificate (AOC) by the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Avia Solutions Group specialises in the field of ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance) charter airline operations.

This authorization, along with a Type A Operating License and Route License, paves the way for Ascend Airways to launch commercial flights.

Ascend Airways Clear to Commence Operations

ASG, the world’s largest ACMI provider with a fleet exceeding 212 aircraft, welcomes Ascend Airways as a strategic asset.

The UK AOC grants unrestricted access to the lucrative UK ACMI and charter market, allowing ASG to solidify its position and expand its global reach.

Ascend Airways gears up for its inaugural year with plans to operate two Boeing 737 aircraft. The airline anticipates further fleet growth in the future.

Focus on UK and Malaysia

“Securing the AOC and licenses demanded a significant investment of time and resources,” remarked Alastair Willson, CEO of Ascend Airways.

Avia Solutions Group, headquartered in Ireland, currently boasts a portfolio of twelve AOCs worldwide.

By the end of 2024, the group aims to establish or acquire four additional airlines in strategically chosen countries like Brazil, Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia.

Across the two days, the Board visited GE Aerospace, British Airways Maintenance, Wales Air Ambulance, and ecube. The purpose of the visit was to remain up to date with developing technologies and consumer needs in the sector.

Wales: A Key Player in Aviation’s Future

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Board recently embarked on a two-day visit to Wales, underscoring the region’s growing significance in shaping the future of safe and sustainable air travel.

This visit served a dual purpose. It allowed the Board, led by Chair Sir Stephen Hillier and Chief Executive Rob Bishton, to stay abreast of cutting-edge technologies and evolving consumer demands within the aviation sector. Furthermore, it provided a platform to strengthen ties with key stakeholders in Wales.

Travel Itinerary

The planned tour included visits to a number of leading Welsh organizations. This included GE Aerospace, British Airways Maintenance Wales, the Wales Air Ambulance, and ecube.

These visits offered a first hand look at advancements in aircraft maintenance, engine testing, and pioneering recycling initiatives.

Sir Stephen Hillier emphasized the critical role Wales plays in the UK’s aerospace industry. “The industry in Wales is integral to the continuous evolution of the UK’s aerospace sector,” he remarked.

He stressed the importance for the CAA, as the industry regulator, to stay informed on key matters. This involves an awareness of rapid developments and changing trends in consumer needs.

They also witnessed the expertise of the British Airways Maintenance Wales team. They are responsible for overhauling and upgrading the airline’s 777 and 787 fleets.

The delegation also gained insights into the operations of Wales Air Ambulance, the UK’s largest air ambulance service.

Additionally, they visited ecube, a global leader in aircraft storage and disassembly. Ecube employs sustainable practices of recycling and upcycling aircraft components. This visit aligns with the CAA’s commitment to a greener future for aviation.

Saudi Arabia’s Aviation Strategy Reaps Record Air Traffic

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) announced impressive growth in flights, passenger numbers, and global connections in 2023.

The Saudi skies saw a record-breaking year, with a record 112 million passengers and 815,000 flights recorded.

This surge is a direct result of the ongoing Saudi Aviation Strategy, which is transforming the Kingdom’s aviation sector. The 2023 result – a 26% increase on 2022 and 8% above 2019 levels – shows the Strategy to be a success so far. 

Passenger Boom

Flight activity boomed in 2023, with a 16% increase to 814,995 flights compared to 701,290 in the previous year. Passenger numbers experienced an even steeper rise, jumping a substantial 26% from 88 million to a record-breaking 112 million, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

Saudi Arabia’s global reach expanded significantly in 2023. The Kingdom is now connected to a staggering 148 destinations, boasting at least 52 weekly flights to and from each location.

Low-Cost Carriers Take Flight

Low-cost carriers (LCCs) were a major engine of passenger growth, particularly in the domestic market.

Their market share doubled from 27% to 44%, reflecting a growing preference for budget-friendly travel options within Saudi Arabia.

This shift is fueled by increased competition and a wider range of choices for travelers. LCCs also made significant strides internationally, with their market share doubling from 16% pre-pandemic to 32% in 2023.

Saudi Strategy: A Catalyst for Success

GACA President H.E. Mr. Abdulaziz Al-Duailej hailed the 2023 figures as a testament to the strategic vision of the Saudi Aviation Strategy.

He emphasized how this strategy positions Saudi Arabia as a leader in Middle Eastern aviation, boasting record-breaking growth in both flights and passengers.

Looking ahead, Mr. Al-Duailej highlighted the “unprecedented opportunities” being created for global aviation and the private sector.

A prime example is the expansion of Madinah Airport, with its capacity set to double thanks to a successful public-private partnership project.

Further Growth Initiatives

The 12th Saudi Aviation Strategy Steering Committee meeting in Madinah saw the announcement of several exciting growth initiatives alongside the 2023 performance figures.

These include a masterplan expansion project for Madinah Airport that will double its annual capacity from 8 million to 17 million passengers.

Additionally, Saudia will expand its operations at Madinah Airport, featuring dedicated aircraft and increased capacity to cater to both pilgrims and other travelers.

The Saudi Aviation Strategy

The Saudi Aviation Strategy aims to revolutionize the Kingdom’s entire aviation ecosystem by 2030.

This ambitious plan, driven by Vision 2030 and aligned with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy. It seeks to propel Saudi Arabia to the top spot in the Middle Eastern aviation sector.

In summary, the key elements of the Strategy include:

  • Unlocking US$100 billion in private and public investment across airports, airlines, and aviation support services.
  • Expanding Saudi Arabia’s global connectivity from 99 destinations to over 250 across 29 airports.
  • Tripling annual passenger traffic to a staggering 330 million.
  • Establishing two global long-haul connecting hubs.
  • Increasing air cargo capacity to 4.5 million tons.

Steering the Course

The Saudi Aviation Strategy is spearheaded by GACA, the Kingdom’s aviation regulator. GACA’s mission is to develop the air transport industry in accordance with international standards.

It aims to solidify Saudi Arabia’s position as a global leader in civil aviation, and enforce regulations to ensure the safety and security of air travel.
