The Norwegian Group has this week released very positive numbers for the second quarter of this year, with strong growth ahead.

Furthermore, the airline is beginning to experience success from strong demand in the Summer and is preparing well for the Winter.

The Numbers from The Norwegian Group…

The Norwegian Group produced a operating profit of NOK 593 million in 2Q24, with profit before tax amounting to NOK 477 million.

Across the mainline airline and their recently-acquired Wideroe, they run a fleet of 135 aircraft.

For the mainline carrier, they handled 6.3m passengers, with an additional one million at Wideroe, totalling 7.3m at the Group.

Quarterly load factor for both carriers stand at 82.4% and 70.2% respectively.

The improvements were down 2% and up 1% too respectively.

Within The Norwegian Group, a total of 27 new routes will be launched for the Winter season, with some consisting of:

• Dubai
• Agadir
• Hurghada
• Tromso
• Harstad/Narvik.

In-all, the numbers have been pretty positive for the company.

CEO Karlsen: Delivered Good Operations…

Commenting on the strong results in 2Q24 was Geir Karlsen, the CEO of The Norwegian Group:

“We have delivered good operations in the second quarter amidst a hectic ramp-up into the summer season, and I am glad that Norwegian in May once again was named Europe’s most punctual airline.”

“Both Norwegian and Widerøe are delivering strong passenger growth.”

“With an increasing number of routes, frequencies and destinations, we look forward to welcoming passengers on board”.

Karlsen confirmed that for The Norwegian Group, overall capacity in 2024 is expected to grow by 12%.

By Summer 2025, the fleet at Norwegian will increase to 90 aircraft, but they did caveat that growth is expected to slow due to Boeing delivery delays.

Norwegian carried 2,245,735 passengers, while Widerøe transported 346,747, bringing the group total to 2,592,482.

This translates to an 11% increase for Norwegian and a 6% increase for Widerøe compared to June 2023.

Revised 2024 Profit Outlook: Here’s Why

However, despite the positive passenger trends, the group announced a downward revision to its 2024 profit outlook. This adjustment stems from four key factors impacting the airline industry:

Softer Than Expected Demand

The second quarter witnessed a decline in both load factor, a measure of how full flights are, and yield, the average fare per passenger, compared to the previous year. This indicates a softening in travel demand, potentially due to economic uncertainties.

Boeing Delivery Delays

Delays in aircraft deliveries from Boeing forced Norwegian to secure temporary external capacity during the peak summer season. This unexpected expense disrupts the airline’s operational budget.

Currency Fluctuations

The Norwegian Krone weakened against the US Dollar compared to initial forecasts. Since a significant portion of airline expenses are denominated in USD (like fuel), a weaker Krone translates to higher costs for the airline.

Passenger Growth Highlights Positive Trends

Despite the profit outlook revision, the passenger numbers paint a positive picture for the Norwegian Group.

Both Norwegian and Widerøe reported year-over-year increases, indicating a continued demand for their services.

Notably, Norwegian’s capacity (ASK), which reflects the total number of seats available for sale multiplied by the distance traveled, rose by 18% to 3,706 million seat kilometers.

This expansion was met with strong passenger traffic (RPK), measured by passengers multiplied by the distance traveled, which rose by 16% to 3,126 million seat kilometers.

Widerøe also saw growth, with their capacity reaching 185 million seat kilometers and passenger traffic at 142 million seat kilometers.

Operational Performance

The Norwegian Group maintained a high level of operational efficiency in June. Regularity, which refers to the percentage of flights operating as scheduled, remained impressive at 99.4%.

Punctuality, measured by flights departing within 15 minutes of their scheduled time, was 75.0%. While punctuality decreased slightly compared to June 2023, it’s important to note that 96% of flights still arrived within an hour of their scheduled arrival time.

Additionally, the airline operated an average of 86 aircraft throughout June, demonstrating its commitment to meeting passenger demand.

Expansion in Northern Norway

The Norwegian Group is making strategic investments in Northern Norway. They’ve launched a total of 50 new routes in 2024 so far, with a particular focus on increasing connectivity between this region and popular European destinations.

Overall the airline group has put in a good showing, despite severe bad weather conditions.

In January, Norwegian Air Shuttle had 1,138,621 passengers, while Widerøe had 246,326 passengers. This means that the Norwegian Group had 1,384,947 passengers in total.

Norwegian increased its load factor to 83.1 percent in January, up 5 percentage points compared to the same period last year.

Norwegian Performance

“For the first time, our traffic figures include those of Widerøe, and in total, Norwegian and Widerøe had 1.4 million passengers on board in the first month of the year,” said Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian.

“For Norwegian, it is very positive that the load factor increased by five percentage points compared to January last year.”

“Demand to beach destinations continues to perform in the high-end of our expectations with many of our customers opting for some warmer Mediterranean weather.”

Widerøe Acquisition

In December, the Norwegian Competition Authority approved Norwegian’s acquisition of Widerøe, and the transaction was completed 12 January.

Work has already begun to ensure that organisations deliver on shared goals with the aim of delivering better overall customer offerings with seamless travel and increased travel options.

One example involves the changing of Norwegian’s ground handling provider to Widerøe Ground Handling, which took effect from 1 February at many airports across Norway.

Widerøe increased its production in January with 4 percent compared with the same period last year, while the number of passengers increased with 8 percent. The load factor was up 3 percentage points.

The Widerøe result in January was characterized by a very challenging weather month with many cancellations and delays.

Weather cancellations resulted in lost revenue for the carrier and incurred a lot of extra costs with customer accommodation, alternative transportation and rebooking of customers to other airlines. Overall, poor weather conditions also negatively affected passenger numbers in January.

Widerøe remains confident with the market going forward. The New Year’s sale set new records at Widerøe and the demand for air travel has remained positive. The airline noted that the booking pattern is changing.

During the pandemic and immediately afterwards customers preferred to book tickets close to departure, the airline is now back to pre-pandemic consumer behaviour, where customers have longer planning horizons and are significantly earlier in planning their trip.

“We are satisfied with the figures for January. Despite one of the worst weather months in many years, we are filling the planes better than last year.”

“We are increasing the number of seats available in the market, but the number of passengers with Widerøe is increasing twice as much,” says CEO of Widerøe Stein Nilsen.

Norwegian is set to launch a new direct route connecting Stockholm Arlanda Airport to Skellefteå Airport on 28 October 2024.

The network expansion responds to the growing demand for improved connectivity to northern Sweden.

This week saw Norwegian release their flights for Spring 2025 early, as the airline continues to receive strong demand.

Across their network in Norway, Denmark, Sweden & Finland, they are launching a lot of flights for that short period.

Spring 2025 Flights Program from Norwegian…

The Spring 2025 program for flights with Norwegian is between March 30 to June 1, 2025.

Approximately 5.3m seats will be on offer, with some of the following Winter destinations being extended into the Spring by the airline:

• Agadir
• Dubai
• Hurghada
• Cairo
• Marrakech

It is understood the network layout by country base is as follows also:

• Norway: 111 routes to 78 destinations
• Denmark: 58 routes to 56 destinations
• Sweden: 52 routes to 47 destinations
• Finland: 24 routes to 24 destinations

Norwegian confirmed that flights for the Summer 2025 program will be released at a later date.

Furthermore, it could be suggested that they may release it soon to give customers further flexibility.

Such news comes following the airline showing a positive trajectory in the first quarter, despite industry challenges.

“Many of our customers both like and want to plan trips well in advance, and it is great that we can now offer over five million seats for the coming spring.”

The Norwegian Group continues its positive momentum with strong traffic figures in March. The group, including Widerøe, welcomed a total of 1,820,702 passengers. Of this total number, Norwegian itself transported 1,544,289 travellers.

This is a positive sign for the group, especially considering the early Easter holiday that impacted April bookings.

The group has over 8,200 employees and owns two of the prominent airlines in the Nordics: Norwegian Air Shuttle and Widerøe’s Flyveselskap. 

Norwegian Air Shuttle, the largest Norwegian airline with around 4,700 employees, operates an extensive route network connecting Nordic countries to key European destinations.

In 2023, Norwegian carried over 20 million passengers and maintained a fleet of 87 Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

The load factor for Norwegian flights rose significantly to 85 percent, a 4-percentage point improvement compared to March 2023.

Norwegian’s capacity (ASK) increased by 4 percent year-over-year, reaching 2,441 million seat kilometers in March. Actual passenger traffic (RPK) was 2,075 million seat kilometers. The airline operated an average of 73 aircraft throughout the month.

Pleasingly, Norwegian also achieved a 10 percent reduction in CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer compared to March 2023. This translates to an emissions reduction equivalent to roughly 250,000 passenger round trips between Oslo and Bergen.

“We’re encouraged by the progress in reducing our carbon footprint,” said Karlsen. “This is a combined effort driven by our newer fleet, improved planning leading to a higher load factor, and the use of advanced digital tools to optimize flight patterns.”

“We remain committed to our ambitious target of a 45 percent emissions reduction by 2030. Fleet renewal, operational efficiency, and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) will be key to achieving this goal.”

Widerøe Performance

Widerøe, part of the Norwegian group, also reported positive results with 276,413 passengers in March. Their load factor rose significantly to 70 percent, a 6-percentage point increase.

Additionally, Widerøe saw improvements in both regularity and punctuality, achieving an impressive on-time performance of 89 percent.

Widerøe’s Flyveselskap, Norway’s oldest airline, is Scandinavia’s largest regional carrier. Mainly operating the short-runway airports in rural Norway, Widerøe operates several state contract routes (PSO routes) in addition to its own commercial network.

In 2023, the airline had 3.3 million passengers and a fleet of 48 aircraft, including 45 Bombardier Dash 8’s and three Embraer E190-E2’s. Widerøe Ground Handling provides ground handling services at 41 Norwegian airports.
