Jet2 To Use Sustainable Aviation Fuel At London Stansted

London Stansted Airport has this week revealed that Jet2 will be using Sustainable Aviation Fuel to power their operations at the airfield.

It is understood this move makes the airline ahead of the government’s mandate on SAF, which is due to be introduced in 2025.

Without further ado, let’s get into it…

Jet2 & SAF at London Stansted…

Jet2 has purchased 650 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel from Shell Aviation to be used at London Stansted.

It will be used to add a 1% SAF blend onto a number of departing flights from the airport this year.

The UK carrier has done something similar for it’s operations at Bristol Airport, and is expanding this slowly.

Furthermore, the airline has also made an equity investment into a SAF production plant.

This is expected to be built in the north-west of the UK.

Mitigating Climate Impacts from Both Sides…

Commenting on this move out of London Stansted with sustainable aviation fuel was Steve Heapy, the CEO of Jet2:

“Today’s announcement further demonstrates the tangible actions that we are taking to mitigate our climate impacts, and it means will be using a SAF blend from London Stansted in 2024, in addition to Bristol Airport.”

“We see SAF as critical in helping the industry decarbonise and as well as doing this, we can use this to ensure our operations are ready for SAF uptake both now and in the future, when we anticipate its use will grow materially.”

“We very much see 1% as the starting point and we want to grow this over the coming years.”

“Today’s announcement shows how committed we are to SAF and how much we believe in unlocking its huge potential.”

“Unfortunately, there is still some way to go”.

“Without more supplies of UK SAF and greater support to incentivise its uptake and reduce its cost, our industry and UK holidaymakers are at a disadvantage.”

“The UK Government must implement the price revenue mechanism earlier than the current timeline of 2026.”

“[This] means we can secure investor confidence [&] build the UK SAF plants that we need”.

Overall…

In conclusion, steps like this by Jet2 and London Stansted offer confidence into the use of sustainable aviation fuel.

Looking ahead, all eyes will be on how this will expand for the airline.

The quicker that higher blends of SAF are implemented, the more carbon emissions that can be cut.

However, the UK Government is being urged to do more in speeding up production of this fuel.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel: What the Industry Isn’t Explaining

The term ‘Sustainable Aviation Fuel’ (SAF) refers to liquid hydrocarbon fuels derived from alternative sources like biofuels, waste-to-liquid fuels, and synthetic fuels.

You’re very likely hearing more and more about SAF as a primary driver of sustainable aviation initiatives.

Politicians, the aviation industry, and even the UN tout these fuels as the solution to decarbonizing air travel.

But is SAF really as sustainable as it’s made out to be? Let’s explore some lesser-known facts and clarify some common misconceptions.

Fact 1: 100% SAF Doesn’t Reduce Tailpipe Emissions

SAFs are still hydrocarbon fuels, producing the same CO2 emissions as kerosene when combusted. Any claimed CO2 savings are ‘net’ reductions achieved during fuel production, similar to carbon offsets.

It’s assumed that the biological materials used to produce the fuel generate zero CO2 emissions, as plant growth absorbs CO2 from the air.

Adjustments are then made for the energy-intensive production process and other factors to claim a net reduction compared to kerosene.

Fact 2: Single Flights Using 100% SAF Don’t Solve Supply Issues

Currently, flights are only permitted to use a 50% SAF blend. Recent ‘demo’ flights using 100% SAF showcase the technical feasibility of operating flights entirely on alternative hydrocarbon fuels.

However, the real issue is SAF’s limited supply (approximately 2.6% of total UK aviation fuel use and closer to 0.1% globally last year).

Fact 3: Waste-based Fuels Can’t Scale Up Sustainably

The UK aims to eliminate biological waste going to landfill, and many so-called wastes already have other uses.

The key alternative – synthetic e-fuel – can be produced from captured carbon and green hydrogen. However, this is only being produced in small quantities due to high costs and the need for large amounts of renewable energy.

Fact 4: Official Forecasts Don’t Match SAF Hype

Officials will sometimes portray SAF as a magical solution to aviation emissions, particularly when challenged about private jet use. However, Department for Transport modelling tells a different story.

Even under the UK Government’s ‘High Ambition’ Jet Zero pathway, SAF plays a smaller role in decarbonizing aviation than ‘out of sector’ emissions reductions (offsets and carbon removals) and demand reductions generated by pricing carbon.

Fact 5: Hype Risks Hushing Up Decarbonization Challenge

The independent Climate Change Committee has described the Jet Zero Strategy as relying too heavily on nascent technology and fuels and ignoring the need to limit demand growth. At present, sustainable aviation is an aspiration, not a reality.

While we wait for genuine zero-emission fuels and technologies, we need to start cutting emissions in the only definite way: by flying less.

SAF: Pros & Cons

Viewed in this light, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) has the potential to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of aviation. However, it’s important to have a nuanced understanding of its benefits and limitations. Here’s a breakdown:

Pros:

Reduced CO2 emissions: SAF can achieve lifecycle carbon reductions of up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel. This is because it utilizes sustainable feedstocks that absorb carbon dioxide as they grow, partially offsetting emissions released during combustion.
Drop-in fuel: SAF is compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure, requiring no modifications. This facilitates faster adoption within the industry.
Variety of feedstocks: SAF can be derived from various sources, including used cooking oil, agricultural waste, and even captured carbon dioxide, potentially reducing reliance on dedicated land use for energy crops.
Growing momentum: Production capacity and investment in SAF are increasing rapidly, offering hope for scaling its impact in the future.

Cons:

Limited availability and high cost: Currently, SAF production is much lower than conventional jet fuel, resulting in higher prices. This limits widespread adoption across airlines and routes.
Sustainability concerns: Depending on the feedstock and production methods, SAF might indirectly contribute to deforestation, land-use change, or competition with food resources if not managed sustainably.
Not a complete solution: Even with SAF, aviation still generates other emissions like NOx and contrails that contribute to climate change. Technological advancements like electric or hydrogen-powered aircraft are needed for a truly sustainable future.

Conclusion

SAF is a promising technology with the potential to significantly reduce the environmental impact of aviation.

However, it’s not a magic bullet. Recognizing its limitations and fostering responsible production are crucial for maximizing its benefits and ensuring its true sustainability.

It’s important to consider SAF as part of a broader strategy that includes other emissions reduction measures and technological advancements.

Thai Airways joins with PTT OR to champion Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Thai Airways International Public Company Limited and PTT Oil and Retail Business Public Company Limited have jointly signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for pilot flights and future cooperation.

SAF in the mass market

Thai Airways chief corporate strategy stated that the partnership with PTT OR using SAF, is to lower carbon emission fuel, compared to the traditional fossil fuels.

This partnership will create a new sustainable eco-system in Thailand and throughout the ASEAN (South East Asian Region).

SAF is produced through different mediums including; used cooking oil, sugarcane ethanol, and waste can be produced into SAF. With this formula, this releases 80 percent less carbon dioxide than regular aviation fuel throughout its serviceable lifespan.

The sustainable mixture became widely adapted when mixing with the orthodox Jet A1 regular aviation fuel – this does not require engine conversion.

THAI’s Sustainability Goals

Thailand’s flag carrier is committed to achieving the widely agreed 2050 net zero emission goal domestically and internationally, which is recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and the European Union.

The collaboration between Thai Airways and PTT OR according to Mr. Suchat is set to become stronger than ever through the uptake of the SAF. This month we see the launch a pilot flight of THAI to Phuket International Airport (HKT).

This will create an important milestone where OR SDG’s values especially of the letter ‘G’ or GREEN aim to promote sustainable economic growth; in this case, achieving carbon neutrality within 2030 through sustainable aviation growth.

PTT OR’s Initiative and SAF Landscape in Thailand

PTT OR has been interested in the discipline of SAF for a while.

The company signed an MOU studying the development of, and investment in SAF between the PTT Group, PTT Public Company Limited, Thai Oil Public Company Limited (Thai Oil), PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC), and IRPC Public Company Limited (IRPC) on November 9, 2022

These companies are committed to improving the sustainability landscape in Thailand and helping Thai aviation companies forge towards the Net Zero goal by 2050.

The company is one of Thailand’s leading in the green energy transition and one of the top businesses prioritizing growth alongside global sustainability.

Therefore, the company has expanded the use of biofuel in its operations instead of fossil fuels, making use of waste and leftovers as well as biofuel raw materials in the production of such SAF.

This energy solution promotes and recycles biological products available in the country and maximizes economic benefit.

It serves as a driver for the development of sustainable energy innovations to diversify Thailand’s economic development, along with promoting a good quality of life and sustainability for the community, society, and for the country in the future.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel production: Growth and missed opportunity

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently unveiled compelling estimates that shed light on the rapid growth of sustainable aviation fuel production, marking a crucial step towards a greener future for air travel.

In 2024 SAF production is expected to triple to 1.875 billion liters (1.5Mt), accounting for 0.53% of aviation’s fuel need, and 6% of renewable fuel capacity.

Whilst the growth in 2023 and the projection for the coming year are heartening, there is still a way to go for SAF to make a substantial impact, according the the IATA Director General.

SAF Production Milestones

In the year 2023, SAF volumes soared to an impressive 600 million liters (0.5Mt), doubling the 2022 production of 300 million liters (0.25 Mt).

Remarkably, SAF carved out a 3% share in the renewable fuels market, with the remaining 97% dedicated to other sectors.

Looking ahead to 2024, the forecast is even more promising, with SAF production set to triple, reaching a staggering 1.875 billion liters (1.5Mt).

While this accounts for 0.53% of aviation’s fuel needs, it represents a significant 6% of renewable fuel capacity.

However, the proportion of SAF output in relation to overall renewable fuel production is modest, mainly due to the allocation of new capacity to alternative renewable fuels.

“The doubling of SAF production in 2023 and the expected tripling in 2024 are encouraging signs. However, for SAF to truly make a substantial impact, we need it to constitute 25% to 30% of renewable fuel production capacity,” emphasizes Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

This allocation, he asserts, is crucial for putting aviation on the trajectory towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Policy Landscape

The outcome of the Third Conference on Aviation Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3), hosted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), has positioned SAF at the forefront of global discussions.

A global framework has been established, aiming to make fuels used in international aviation 5% less carbon-intensive by 2030.

Walsh highlights the pivotal role of governments, stating, “Governments must prioritize policies to incentivize the scaling-up of SAF production and to diversify feedstocks with those available locally.”

This policy-driven approach is seen as the linchpin for achieving the exponential increase in SAF production needed to meet ambitious targets.

Supply and Demand Tango

Contrary to misconceptions, demand for SAF is not the stumbling block. In 2023, every drop of SAF produced found a buyer, contributing a noteworthy $756 million to the aviation industry’s fuel bill.

Notably, 43 airlines have already committed to using 16.25 billion liters (13Mt) of SAF in 2030, with more agreements in the pipeline.

The real challenge lies in unlocking the supply to meet this surging demand. Projections indicate over 78 billion liters (63Mt) of renewable fuels by 2029, but a strategic policy framework is imperative.

Governments must incentivize renewable fuel producers to allocate 25-30% of their output to SAF, aligning with CAAF/3 ambitions and existing commitments.

Policy Objectives

To achieve these goals, effective production incentives must focus on:

Accelerating investments in SAF by traditional oil companies
Ensuring renewable fuel production incentives encourage sufficient SAF quantities
Focusing stakeholders on regional diversification of feedstock and SAF production
Identifying and prioritizing high-potential production projects for investment support
Delivering a global SAF Accounting Framework

Unlocking Diversification: The Key to Long-Term Success

As we look ahead, approximately 85% of upcoming sustainable aviation fuel facilities will rely on Hydrotreatment (HEFA) production technology.

However, this predominantly uses inedible animal fats, used cooking oil, and industrial grease as feedstock, raising concerns about limited quantities.

To overcome this, policies should:

Diversify SAF production through certified pathways like Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ) and Fischer-Tropsch (FT)
Promote investments and fast-track certification for new SAF production pathways
Identify additional feedstocks to leverage all SAF technologies, ensuring diversification and regional options

Public Support

A recent IATA survey underscores significant public support for sustainable aviation fuel, with 86% of travelers advocating for government production incentives and an equal percentage prioritizing oil companies supplying SAF to airlines.

Finnair buys 750 tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Finland’s largest airline, Finnair, has made the largest single purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The purchase of 750 tonnes of SAF from world leading producer, Neste will support the airline towards its goal to become a more efficient carrier.

Neste will deliver the fuel to Helsinki Airport during the early months of 2023. The purchase is enough to fuel approximately 400 flights between Helsinki and Stockholm in a 100% unblended composition.

Huurre: Essential for a sustainable future

Outlining the importance the airline puts on achieving a greener status, Senior Vice President for Sustainability, Eveliina Huurre said: “Finnair celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, and reducing emissions from flying is an essential part of a sustainable future.”

“Sustainable aviation fuel will be one of the most important tools for reducing emissions in the coming years. We also involve our customers in this, and a small part of every flight ticket sold goes to the cost of sustainable aviation fuel”

Sustainably sourced and produced from feedstocks such as cooking oils and animal fat wastes, Neste’s MY SAF can work both unblended as a standalone fuel, and as a drop in solution. A drop in solution describes a mixture of SAF blended with conventional jet fuel.

Many airlines currently operate SAF as a blended mixture, partly due to the exorbitant cost they would incur if they were to operate 100% SAF flights. Sustainable aviation fuel can cost up to 50% more than standard fossil jet fuel.

Although SAF is more expensive to buy, Neste MY Business Sustainable Aviation Fuel is described as a “scalable solution that helps companies meet their climate targets.” Today Neste produces 100,000 tonnes of SAF a year, but has an aggressive target to take these production rates up to 1.5 million tonnes a year by the end of 2023.

“Reducing emissions from flying requires an extensive toolkit and everyone’s effort. While we are increasing the use of SAF, we will also continue to take all other steps, from reducing the weight of aircraft to optimizing flight routes and increasing fuel efficiency,” Hurree continued.

Finnair is playing its part

The aviation industry contributes approximately 2-3% of total global carbon dioxide emissions at present rates.

The travel industry is set to at least double over the next 15 years, meaning that airlines around the world must take the net zero target by 2050 seriously if they are to protect the Earth from dangerous greenhouse gases.

The Finnish national flag carrier has an ambitious target to become carbon neutral by 2045, and the fact that this SAF reduces the emission of greenhouse gases by 80% compared to conventional fossil jet fuel, means that it will be a key factor in achieving this status over the next two decades.

“Finnair was one of the first airlines using our Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel. We have been working together for a long time and look forward to supporting Finnair to meet its sustainability targets,”said Jonathan Wood, Vice President Commercial and Technical Management, Renewable Aviation at Neste.

“It is great to see Finnair taking the initiative to voluntarily purchase our SAF as part of their sustainability commitments, and creating awareness among their customers on how to play a role in creating a more sustainable future,” Wood concluded.

Farnborough Air Show 2024 in Review: An Aviation Message in a Bottle

If ever there was an aviation message in a bottle, then perhaps Farnborough Air Show 2024 is it. Or to be more precise – multiple messages in a bottle.

Overall, the dynamics and the focuses evident at this year’s event neatly reflected some of the key underlying factors currently influencing the commercial aviation industry.

Let’s unpack some of the key findings and highlights from this year’s four day event.

Farnborough Air Show: Overall Dynamic

A broad standout at this year’s Farnborough event has been the generally lower level of new firm aircraft orders. Several market factors arguably come into play here, which we discuss below.

The general focus by manufacturers has been centred on developing existing product and nurturing customer experience as opposed to proactively seeking new orders.

This is seen the presentation of premium passenger cabin product, which seeks to capitalise on the current market demand for high-end air travel.

Sustainability and investment in green initiatives has also been a central theme, in keeping with industry emissions reduction goals and targets.

Existing Order Backlogs

Paris Air Show 2023 was something of a windfall event for new aircraft orders. It saw records set for overall firm orders which ran to over 1,100.

It also saw the largest historic order by a carrier, set by India’s low-cost giant IndiGo with its bulk A320neo family order.

With their proverbial bellies full from Paris, both Boeing and Airbus are presently running with large order backlogs.

According to an estimate by Bloomberg intelligence, the backlog of key single aisle variants for both manufacturers now stretches to 10 years at current production rates.

Delivery Delays and the Fallout Effect

On top of the large order backlogs, manufacturing and production issues have dogged the industry in the post Covid recovery era

This has ultimately led to widespread delays on delivery schedules, causing a growing sense of frustration with end users. As pent-up air travel demand continues, so the need for new aircraft deliveries grows more critical.

This week a further airline, flydubai added its criticism of Boeing for delivery delays which were crippling its fleet growth program.

This delay has a flow on effect through the airline’s operations, affecting its financial bottom line and ultimately, its paying passengers.

Several airlines have already been forced into alternatives including wet leasing to get around scheduled delivery delays.

The fallout effect of sustained and widespread delay problems is potential brand damage for the aircraft manufacturer.

Boeing: The ‘Softly Softly’ Approach

Boeing entered this year’s event with a stated passive stance on cultivating new orders. Ahead of the air show opening, Chief Operating Officer Stephanie Pope signaled Boeing’s focus on production and delivery.

Still reeling from issues with its 737 MAX and 787 production lines, Boeing is understandably investing in getting its house in order and back on an even keel.

That being said, the US manufacturer saw appreciable gains for its new 777X line, and widebody 787 variants.

The Asian market was notably represented here, with widebody orders flowing from Japan Airlines and Korean Air.

Airbus

Whilst Airbus did not enter the airshow in quite the same subdued manner as Boeing did, it was similarly carrying a healthy backlog from Paris 2023.

Airbus dominated the play overall with a final large order falling to the European manufacturer on Day 4, with an order from Saudi carrier flynas. The airline signed an MOU for 75 A320neo family aircraft and 15 widebody A330-900 aircraft.

Airbus had picked up a mixed single-aisle A320neo and widebody A350-900 order from Japan Airlines on Day 2.

Another notable MOU for Airbus was for two of its new A321XLR (Extended Long Range) variants from the carrier Drukair.

Virgin Atlantic brought in the other widebody purchase, with a firm order for 7 A330-900 aircraft.

Another order that isn’t in the table above is the last-minute purchase made by the Abra Group, which is a major investor in Avianca & GOL, for five A350-900 aircraft.

Embraer: Playing the Long Game

Interestingly no new commercial aircraft orders were announced by the regional aircraft manufacturer at this year’s event.

Embraer’s strategy with its commercial division appeared to be focused heavily on developing the longer-term market positioning of its E-Jet stable of aircraft.

The manufacturer released its plans for wide-ranging upgrades and performance improvements for its commercial jet product range.

The upgrade packages announced applied to its E195-E2, E190-E2, and E175 variants. These planned upgrades included fuel burn and range improvements, avionics and cabin upgrades.

Market Outlook 2024 released by Embraer during Farnborough airshow estimates 10,500 orders for new jets and turboprops through to 2043.

A snapshot of Embraer at the year’s Farnborough show appears to capture the Profit Hunter fine tuning its weapons to reap a long-term harvest.

Arjan Meijer, Embraer’s President & CEO of Commercial Aviation, said, “A mix fleet of sub-150-seat jets and larger narrowbodies will be the successful fleet strategy for the next 20 years.”

So for now, the Brazilian regional aircraft manufacturers strategy appears to be positioning for a longer game spanning the next two decades.

Embraer’s Market Outlook also contains an analysis of the cargo aircraft market. It cites new opportunities for small-narrowbody freighters resulting from the projected growth in online commerce.

To this end the manufacturer also fielded its E190F passenger to freighter conversion, which looks to be something of a potential game change for the cargo market.

Once again it strategically positions Embraer to capitalise on a gap in the existing global cargo market.

ATR

Rounding off the main manufacturers, regional aircraft manufacturer ATR similarly maintained a focus on product support.

ATR firmed a new MRO capability to support the Africa and Middle East market. As part of Ethiopian Airlines Group, Ethiopian MRO’s maintenance capabilities will support ATR operators in the region.

ATR will also explore collaborative ways to train new ATR pilots with the Ethiopian pilot academy.

On the new order front, ATR acquired one new order from the Farnborough Air Show. It signed a firm order for four ATR 72-600 aircraft with Pacific carrier Air Tahiti.

The airline currently operates a fleet of 11 aircraft, comprising nine ATR 72-600 and two ATR 42-600.

Sustainability

Sustainability initiatives remained a key focus for the major manufacturers, with several announcements during the Farnborough Air Show. Airbus is investing in LanzaJet, a leading sustainable fuels technology company and producer.

This agreement in line with its ambition to act as a catalyst for the global development of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

Airbus also announced a new partnership with aircraft lessor, Avolon, to study the potential of hydrogen-powered aircraft. This marks the very first collaboration of the ZEROe Project with an operating lessor.

For its part, Boeing announced a new partnership with Clear Sky, an investment company dedicated to aviation sustainability. The pair are joining forces to accelerate sustainability solutions for aviation.

As an initial project, the companies will help in testing and advancing Firefly Green Fuels’ cutting-edge technology. The aim is to increase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production in the UK.

The Focus on Premium Cabin Product

As global aviation continues to move through the post-pandemic rebound era, the industry has seen a shift in customer sentiments towards high-end leisure air travel demand.

Evidenced by recent monthly performance reports, major airlines are consistently seeing financial gains from their First Class and Premium class sales.

The shift in focus towards high-end cabin product has been particularly evident at Farnborough FIA2024 this year.

Manufacturers and major airlines will likely increasingly focus on product development and the cultivating of improved customer experience to meet this market demand.

Qantas Joins Global Alliance to Boost Aviation Biofuel Production

Qantas has partnered with a coalition of airlines, aircraft manufacturers, and energy and finance companies to accelerate the global production of aviation biofuel.

This collective, known as the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Financing Alliance (SAFFA), aims to further the aviation industry’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

The alliance boasts an impressive line-up of initial partners. Airbus takes the lead as the anchor investor, joined by Air France-KLM, Mitsubishi HC Capital Inc., and BNP Paribas, Associated Energy Group.

Burnham Sterling Asset Management will serve as the fund manager. Together, these industry leaders have committed approximately $US200 million to kickstart the initiative.

Qantas SAF Investment

Qantas has pledged US$50 million (AU$75 million) from its Climate Fund. This fund, established in 2023 in partnership with Airbus, focuses on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) projects and other environmental initiatives.

SAF has emerged as a critical tool in the airline industry’s arsenal to combat emissions. Low and zero-emission aircraft technology still decades away from widespread implementation.

In the interim, SAF offers a more immediate solution. However, the current global demand for SAF significantly outpaces its supply, creating a pressing need for increased production.

SAFFA’s investment strategy will target SAF technology development and production projects. The alliance will initially focus on opportunities that repurpose existing infrastructure, maximizing efficiency and reducing costs.

While investments will begin in the United States, SAFFA plans to diversify across various SAF production pathways and regions over time.

Securing Priority SAF Offtake

A key benefit for Qantas and other SAFFA partners is the opportunity to secure priority offtake contracts for SAF produced through supported projects.

This arrangement ensures a steady supply of sustainable fuel for participating airlines, helping them meet their emissions reduction targets.

The fund has already made its first investment, backing US-based technology company Crysalis Biosciences in April 2024.

Crysalis aims to revitalize chemical manufacturing infrastructure with innovative fuel and chemical production technologies.

In a promising start, the company has successfully acquired and renovated a previously closed ethanol plant in Illinois, which has now received approval to produce low carbon intensity SAF and biochemicals.

Qantas CEO Comments

Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson emphasized the importance of SAFFA’s focus on commercially viable, technologically mature projects.

“Aviation is one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize,” Hudson stated. “Partnerships like this are essential to help bridge the gap between supply and demand.”

Hudson also highlighted the current price disparity between SAF and conventional jet fuel. She noted that industry investment is crucial to scaling production and ultimately driving down costs.

While Qantas maintains a strong focus on Australian projects through its Climate Fund and SAF partnership with Airbus, many domestic opportunities have long development lead times.

SAFFA provides a pathway for Qantas to access SAF sooner in key overseas markets while simultaneously supporting the growth of the global SAF industry.

Exploring Other Domestic Opportunities

In addition to its SAFFA investment, Qantas is actively exploring other domestic opportunities for its Climate Fund, with announcements expected in the coming months.

The airline has already invested in a Queensland biofuel production facility being developed by Jet Zero Australia in partnership with LanzaJet, a leading sustainable aviation fuel technology company.

Jet Zero Australia recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully raising A$29 million in its second round of funding.

Summary

Qantas has set ambitious targets for aviation biofuel adoption. It plans for 10% use in the Group’s fuel mix by 2030 and approximately 60% by 2050.

The airline has already made strides in SAF procurement. It has purchased around 10 million liters annually from London since 2022 and secured contracts for 20 million liters from California.

As the aviation industry continues to grapple with the challenges of decarbonization, initiatives like SAFFA and Qantas’ proactive approach to SAF adoption are key.

ASL Aviation Signs Order for 20 ZeroAvia Hydrogen-Electric Engines

Global operator ASL Aviation Holdings has taken a significant step towards sustainable air cargo with a conditional purchase agreement for up to 20 hydrogen-electric engines from ZeroAvia.

This deal paves the way for the development of some of the world’s first zero-emission freight aircraft on a large scale.

The agreement builds upon a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in November 2021. ASL has now secured delivery slots with a firm order for 10 engines, with an option for an additional 10.

The engine purchase is supported by a related retrofit service agreement. This expands ZeroAvia’s total confirmed engine orders.

Hydrogen-Electric Engines

Hydrogen-electric engines are a game-changer for aviation. They utilize fuel cells to convert hydrogen fuel into electricity through an electrochemical reaction.

This clean process eliminates CO2 emissions and other harmful pollutants, producing only water vapor as a byproduct.

The generated electricity then powers electric motors that drive the propellers. Experts estimate hydrogen-electric technology could slash in-flight emissions by a staggering 90%.

Additionally, these engines offer airlines the benefit of reduced maintenance costs.

ZeroAvia Testing Program

ZeroAvia has already achieved success with multiple test flights of a prototype 600kW system designed for 10-20 seat aircraft.

The company is actively collaborating with regulatory bodies to secure certification. Furthermore, ZeroAvia demonstrates continuous progress with component testing for their 2-5 MW system (ZA2000).

This is a system capable of powering aircraft within the ATR family, which ASL Airlines currently operates 13 of.

ASL’s decision to explore hydrogen-electric technology for its ATR freighter aircraft aligns perfectly with their commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.

This initiative goes hand-in-hand with their existing efforts to reduce Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions across their entire airline network.

Additionally, ASL has established ASL CargoVision, an industry forum collaborating with leading tech companies to promote innovative solutions and sustainability practices within air cargo operations.

Stakeholder Comments

James Peck, Chief Customer Officer at ZeroAvia, spoke on the new partnership: “ASL is a major player in the freight industry, and they’re leading the charge towards a sustainable future.”

Airbus Leads UK Hydrogen Aviation Initiative at Gatwick Airport

Airbus has announced a strategic partnership with London Gatwick Airport, easyJet, and Air Products. This collaboration aims to significantly expand hydrogen capabilities and infrastructure in the United Kingdom.

It marks a further crucial step towards Airbus’ ambitious goal of launching a hydrogen-powered aircraft by 2035.

The Hydrogen Hub Initiative: A Closer Look

The partnership falls under Airbus’ innovative “Hydrogen Hubs at Airports” program, a global initiative designed to promote the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure in aviation.

To date, similar agreements have been signed in 13 countries, including Canada, France, Germany, and the United States. This is indicative of the worldwide momentum behind hydrogen as a sustainable aviation fuel.

The scope of this UK-based project is comprehensive, covering three key areas:

Why London Gatwick and easyJet?

Glenn Llewellyn, Airbus Vice President of the ZEROe Project, emphasized the importance of hydrogen in decarbonizing the aviation industry.

Stewart Wingate, CEO of London Gatwick, highlighted the potential of hydrogen in addressing Scope 3 emissions, particularly for short-haul flights.

He also noted the airport’s accelerated plans to achieve net-zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, ten years earlier than initially planned.

easyJet’s Chief Operating Officer, David Morgan, stressed the critical role of hydrogen in aviation decarbonization and the importance of laying the groundwork now.

He expressed confidence that projects like this, combined with regulatory support, will prepare UK airports for a hydrogen transition.

Challenges and Opportunities

While the partnership represents a significant step forward, several challenges remain. Developing safe and efficient hydrogen storage and distribution systems at airports will require substantial investment and technological innovation.

Additionally, designing aircraft capable of using hydrogen fuel while maintaining current safety standards and operational efficiencies is a complex engineering feat.

However, the potential benefits are immense. Hydrogen-powered aircraft could dramatically reduce the aviation industry’s carbon footprint.

This will help to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations and public demand for sustainable travel options.

As Suzanne Lowe from Air Products pointed out, the Hydrogen Hubs at Airports framework has broader implications. It is “an important milestone in paving the way for sustainable aviation and future-proofing the UK economy,” she said.

The project could catalyze broader adoption of hydrogen technology across various sectors, positioning the UK as a global leader in the hydrogen economy.

Furthermore, the partnership complements ongoing work by easyJet and Airbus with Hydrogen South West, an ecosystem aimed at bringing hydrogen benefits to Southwest England.

This holistic approach to hydrogen infrastructure development could create a ripple effect, spurring innovation and economic growth across the country.

Joby Aviation Completes Landmark 523-Mile Hydrogen-Electric Flight

Joby Aviation, Inc. (NYSE:JOBY) has achieved a notable accomplishment with a recent hydrogen electric powered demonstrator flight.

The company successfully flew a hydrogen electric air taxi demonstrator an impressive 523 miles, with water as the only emission.

This flight highlights the potential of hydrogen technology to revolutionize regional air travel, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional aviation methods.

VTOL

The aircraft, which features vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities, builds upon Joby’s successful battery electric air taxi development program.

This innovative approach demonstrates the potential for hydrogen to enable emissions-free, regional journeys that don’t require a runway, paving the way for more flexible and environmentally friendly air travel options.

JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby, spoke about the achievement. “Traveling by air is central to human progress, but we need to find ways to make it cleaner.”

“Our battery electric air taxi set to fundamentally change the way we move around cities. We’re excited to now be building a technology stack that could redefine regional travel using hydrogen electric aircraft.”

Hydrogen and UAM

Bevirt painted a vivid picture of the future, describing scenarios where passengers could fly between major cities like San Francisco and San Diego, or Boston and Baltimore.

This would be achievable without the need for traditional airports and with zero harmful emissions. He emphasized that this vision is closer to reality than ever before, thanks to the progress Joby has made in certifying their battery electric aircraft.

The landmark test flight is believed to be the first forward flight of a vertical takeoff and landing aircraft powered by liquid hydrogen. It was completed using a converted Joby pre-production prototype.

This aircraft was fitted with a liquid hydrogen fuel tank and fuel cell system. Impressively, the aircraft landed with 10% of its hydrogen fuel load remaining. This highlights the efficiency and range potential of this new propulsion system.

AFWERX Commendation

Jacob Wilson, (Acting) Branch Chief of AFWERX Agility Prime, commended Joby’s efforts, stating that their work aligns with broader Department of Defense goals. This focus is on energy substitution, diversification, and demand reduction.

This endorsement from a military perspective shows the potential applications of this technology beyond civilian use.

Dee Dee Myers, Senior Advisor to California Governor Gavin Newsom further highlighted California’s commitment to clean technology and high-tech manufacturing.

She praised Joby’s pioneering work in decarbonizing aviation, noting their advancements in both battery and hydrogen fuel cell technology.

These are contributing to the fight against climate change and creating a cleaner energy future for California.

The hydrogen electric demonstrator froms part of Joby’s future technology program. It represents years of collaboration between a small team at Joby and H2FLY, the company’s wholly owned subsidiary based in Stuttgart, Germany.

The converted aircraft had previously completed over 25,000 miles of testing as a battery-electric aircraft at Joby’s base in Marina, CA.

Demonstrator Aircraft Technical Specs

The technical details of the hydrogen electric demonstrator are impressive. It features a liquid hydrogen fuel tank designed and built by Joby. This is capable of storing up to 40 kilograms of liquid hydrogen.

The fuel cell system, designed and built by H2FLY, converts the hydrogen into electricity, water, and heat.

This electricity powers the six electric motors on the Joby aircraft. Batteries then provide additional power primarily during takeoff and landing phases.

Joby’s commitment to innovation extends beyond hydrogen technology. The company recently bought Xwing Inc., a leader in autonomous aviation technology.

Xwing has already achieved significant milestones, including 250 fully autonomous flights and over 500 auto landings. This was achieved using their in-house developed Superpilot software.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, Joby plans to launch commercial operations with its battery-electric air taxi as early as 2025.

Substantial financial support backs Joby’s ambitious goals. Joby has raised more than $2 billion in funding from prominent investors. These investors include Toyota, Delta Air Lines, SK Telecom, Uber, and Baillie Gifford.

Joby Aviation continues to push the boundaries of sustainable aviation technology. Their success with both battery-electric and hydrogen-electric aircraft positions them as an industry pioneer.

Their innovative approach promises to transform and influence the developing urban and regional air mobility sector.
