Archer Aviation Inc. (NYSE: ACHR) has updated on the progress of its high-volume manufacturing facility in Covington, GA. The company confirms the facility is on track for completion in 2024.

Last week, Archer displayed its Midnight aircraft at Atlantic Aviation’s new terminal at DeKalb–Peachtree Municipal Airport.

The event welcomed officials from Georgia’s Office of the Governor, Congressional Offices, Atlanta City, State Legislature, Federal Aviation Administration, and local governments.

Manufacturing Facility Update

The Covington facility’s construction is advancing smoothly. Archer has finished the first phase, which included grading and foundation work.

The second phase, involving the erection of exterior walls and roof, is nearly complete. The remaining phases – interior fit-out and equipment installation – are set to finish in the coming months.

Upon completion, the facility will span nearly 400,000 square feet. It aims to produce up to 650 Midnight aircraft yearly, potentially making it one of the aviation industry’s largest manufacturing facilities by volume.

Archer is collaborating closely with Stellantis on this project, as they continue to develop plans for mass production of the Midnight aircraft.

Adam Goldstein, Archer’s CEO and founder, stated, “Our teams are working hard to complete this facility by year-end. Once finished, we’ll focus on scaling production to 650 aircraft annually. We aim to be the first in the eVTOL industry to achieve large-scale manufacturing.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released Archer’s Midnight aircraft’s final airworthiness criteria for public review.

This significant regulatory milestone provides the solidified path for Archer to achieve Type Certification for Midnight. 

Archer is one of two companies in the world to achieve this certification progress with the FAA for an eVTOL aircraft. 

 The finalization of Archer’s airworthiness criteria now permits Archer to work with the FAA to obtain the remaining final approvals on its certification and test plans. 

A Step Toward Type Certification

This crucial step paves the way for Archer to secure Type Certification for Midnight, positioning them as one of only two companies globally to reach this stage with the FAA for an eVTOL aircraft.

The finalized airworthiness criteria empower Archer to collaborate with the FAA on obtaining the final necessary approvals for its certification and testing plans.

This is a critical juncture as Archer intensifies its “for credit” testing with the FAA and prepares for piloted flight testing later in 2024.

Midnight Testing Ramps Up

Eric Wright, Archer’s Head of Certification gave comment on the latest step. “This achievement significantly strengthens Midnight’s certification program as we ramp up our ‘for credit’ testing efforts with the FAA.”

Archer has now tested Midnight’s systems and components to ensure flight safety in preparation for upcoming piloted flight tests scheduled for later this year.

This testing aligns with their ongoing FAA certification program. Furthermore, the company has made substantial progress in constructing its initial fleet of three piloted conforming Midnight aircraft.

The first aircraft is slated to begin piloted flight testing later in 2024. This will be followed by “for credit” flight testing alongside the FAA as Archer progresses towards commercialization.

Archer envisions revolutionizing urban transportation by transforming lengthy car commutes into swift, sustainable, and noise-reduced flights.

It aims to replace a 60-90 minute drive with a 10-20 minute air taxi flight. This will be achievable at a comparable price to ground transportation.

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft developer Archer Aviation Inc. (NYSE: ACHR), has now received its Part 145 maintenance certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Under FAA regulations, Archer is now authorized to perform specialized aircraft repair services , and furthers its progress towards eVTOL commercial flight operations.

Archer Aviation Inc. [NYSE: ACHR] and BETA Technologies have formed an industry-first agreement to accelerate the deployment of an interoperable fast-charging system for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

This collaboration aims to facilitate the efficient charging of electric aircraft and further contribute to the development of the electric aviation industry.

Charging System Standard

Archer Aviation and BETA Technologies are collaborating to deploy a fast-charging system for electric aircraft. Archer is using BETA’s Charge Cube and Mini Cube charging systems at its flight test facilities.

BETA’s charging system uses the Combined Charging Standard (CCS), which is a well-established, multimodal, interoperable standard widely employed by major OEMs in the electric vehicle industry.

The CCS standard is peer-reviewed and globally certified, and it is harmonized with EUROCAE ED-308.

BETA Technologies already has its charging systems in use at 14 locations across the eastern United States.

Development work is underway to install these systems at an additional 55 locations along the East and Gulf Coasts, as well as at Archer’s facilities in California.

This expansion will help create a widespread charging network for electric aircraft.

Importance of Fast Charging

Fast charging is crucial for achieving rapid turnaround times between flights. The collaboration between Archer and BETA aims to ensure efficient charging infrastructure to support electric air taxis and their scale in the coming years.

The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) has endorsed the use of a common charging standard for eVTOL aircraft.

This endorsement is expected to boost confidence in the emerging Advanced Air Mobility sector and encourage wider adoption of publicly accessible charging networks in the electric aviation industry.

Dr. Michael Schwekutsch, Senior Vice President of Powertrain at Archer and formerly the Vice President of Powertrain Engineering at Tesla, emphasized the importance of widely accessible, fast-charging networks for driving the adoption of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Use of a common standard
